Bengali (Honours)

The Bengali Department of this college started it's journey from 1879 (intermediate). Intellectuals from other disciplines devoted their time for teaching Bengali, because the college had no separate teacher for Bengali in its embryonic stage. Pandit Madan Mohan Tarkalankar, Kabi Kamini Roy and many other respective persons took regular classes for a long time to Bengali Department for the necessary momentum.

Bengali Department

English (Honours)

The Department of English may be fittingly described as a 'heritage' department of a heritage Institution because English has been taught as a subject right from the inception of Bethune College in 1879, when A. W. Croft, arranged the transfer of Baboo Sosi Bhushan Dutt, 'a master of English and of Philosophy', from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack to Bethune College (then part of Bethune School) in Calcutta, to teach Kadambini Basu in the F.A. class.

English Department

History (Honours)

Set up in 2006, it is a rich repository of old documents and records including invaluable photographs pertaining to the early history of the first women's college in the country. They are presently undergoing a process of technical preservation with grants from both State and Central governments.

Philosophy (Honours)

The history of the Department of Philosophy, initially known as 'Mental and Moral Philosophy', spans throughout the last 107 years and it is a matter of great pride to highlight the continuity of the educational vis-ā-vis teaching standard and the academic performance of the department. The Department was established in 1908 when Philosophy as a subject was introduced in the intermediate classes. Two years later in 1910 it was taught as a General subject in B.A. Pass Course.

College was established in 1879. Sanskrit as a subject was introduced in 1880.From the college record it is learnt that the teaching staff strength rose to four in 1880.From the very begining the students interested in Sanskrit proved their worth by satisfactory result in the university examination.

Hindi (Honours)

Hindi, being the primary official language of our country along with its multifarious dialects and literary verdure is like a mirror, which reflects a major part of Indian culture. Historicity, literature and ethnicity. Hindi became a subject of study in Bethune College, Kolkata as MIL (Morden Indian Language ) in the Year 2001.

Botany (Honours)

Botany has the distinction of being the first science subject to be taught in The Bethune College. Miss Hemaprova Bose (sister of the eminent scientist Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose), Head mistress of the collegiate school, also took the responsibility of teaching the subject as lecturer during 1903-1914, after which she become a full time lecturer in Botany in the college.

Chemistry (Honours)

The history of Chemistry Department dates back to 1923 when the college was first affiliated to Intermediate Science with only one teacher named Sri Santosh Kumar Banerjee. Prof. Ashima Chatterjee, an eminent scientist was a student of I.Sc. course of this college. Prof. Debi Chakroborty, Emeritus Professor (M.Sc., P.R.S., D. Phil (Oxford) C. Chem, FRIC (London)) took charge of the department in the year 1945. In addition to normal teaching in Chemistry, there was a research laboratory attached to the department where PG research work was carried on under her guidance.

Computer Science (Honours)

The University of Calcutta decided to start an undergraduate course in Computer Science (Honours) in the year 1996. Soon, more and more colleges decided to incorporate this course to cater to the rising need of a degree in Computer Science. Bethune College was the first government college under University of Calcutta to offer a degree in Computer Science (Honours).

Economics (Honours)

The Department of Economics, Bethune College, Kolkata, was established in the year 1917. Though, initially only General course in Economics was offered in the Department, later in 1963 Economics was introduced as an Honours subject. The Department has four sanctioned teaching posts with one Associate Professor and three Assistant Professors presently serving the Department.

In the year 1960, B.Sc. Physics (Pass) course under the University of Calcutta was introduced then in 1967 Honours Course affiliated to the same University was started under the leadership of Prof. Chameli Basu the then Head of the Department along with her worthy colleagues Dr. Annapurna Sarkar, Smt. Pratibha Dasgupta, Prof. Shovana Mukhopadhyay and others.

Psychology (Honours)

The Department of Psychology, Bethune College was started in 1961 offering Pass Course at B.A. / B.Sc. level under the Headship of Sm. Arati Das. Smt. Bharati Pal and Smt. Basantika Lahiri joined the department in 1963. The Honours Course in Psychology was started with the initiative of Prof. Pushpa Mishra, the then Principal of Bethune College, and the then Head of the Department, Dr. Syamali Sen in 1999 with 15 students. Currently the total No. of seats for the Honours Course is 36.

Bethune College Department of Statistics was established in the year 2001. Initially undergraduate pass course was offered for the Economics, Mathematics and Physics honours students. Only very recently, from 2015-16 academic session the department started offering three year honours degree course in Statistics.

Zoology (Honours)

The Department of Zoology, Bethune College has been considered as one of the highly rated departments of the College. The teaching of the subject at the Intermediate level began in this college in 1952, Under Graduate (Pass) in1964, Under Graduate (Honours) in 1973 and Post Graduate in 2005. All the aforesaid courses are under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta, however, the college enjoys an autonomy in the PG course.
