The College has a Research Committee formed in accordance with UGC XII plan guidelines, representing both the Arts and Science streams headed by the Principal.
The Committee intimates the teachers about various Research schemes and Fellowships, and motivates them in applying for the same. It screens project proposals funded by different agencies. A large number of successful projects bear testimony to the way this Committee promotes and directs research in the College.
23 minor, 13 major and 8 short term interdisciplinary research projects have been conducted during 2009-2013.Under the XIIth Plan, 8 Minor Research Projects have been approved by the UGC in the current academic session. A considerable number of publications in journals and periodicals, articles in books and authorship of books go to the credit of the teachers. The College has published 14 landmark books of literary and historical value since 1949. It has 7 publications to its credit in the last four years. Two volumes of an interdisciplinary peer reviewed journal of the College, Heritage, have been published in 2014 and 2015.
The Multifacility Centre for Arts and Science were established in Bethune College as a quality enhancement measure with the aim of encouraging interdisciplinary research. Both the Centre are located in the second floor of Pritilata Bhawan. Though the Centres are in the nascent stage, yet, they are well-equipped and have modern equipments that are required by various departments for research. Teachers of various departments, particularly the Post Graduate departments, regularly follow computer assisted learning methods to make the classes more interesting and comprehensive. So the Centre not only facilitates research but also enriches the teaching learning process.
A considerable number of books, belonging to multiple disciplines in the Multifacility Centre for Arts. The Centre also has a collection of DVDs. Film shows are often organized to enhance classroom teaching. Students are benefited immensely by watching the cinematic adaptation of a text in their syllabus. It helps them to critically appreciate the text. Interactive Study Circles involving UG & PG students are organized by the MFC (Arts).
Members of the faculty who are engaged in PhD or Minor/Major Research Projects utilize the Centre's space and internet facilities for the purpose of research. In the long run, the College plans to host an internal repository of research work done by the members of the faculty and the postgraduate students in the Centre.
Seminars and Workshops
The College also organises seminars and workshops on diverse topics with focus on capacity building and promoting research culture among the staff and students. As part of the postgraduate curriculum, the students present research papers and also submit duly supervised dissertations.
