About the Department
Hindi, being the primary official language of our country along with its multifarious dialects and literary verdure is like a mirror, which reflects a major part of Indian culture. Historicity, literature and ethnicity. Hindi became a subject of study in Bethune College, Kolkata as MIL (Morden Indian Language ) in the Year 2001. Dr. Bibha KUmari was the first Part-Time teacher in Hindi of Bethune College. Onwards from 2005, Hindi was introduced as a subject in General Elective under Pass Course Curriculum. The year 2014 ushered the staring of a new era in Hindi undergraduate studies in Bethune College.
Research and Extension Activities
The teachers are specialised experts in their own field and have quite a number of publications to their credit. Dr. Abhijit Bhattacharyya has 15 published research books on Literary Philosophy of Ancient and Medieval Period emphasizing on Jainology and Vaishnavism. He also presented many Research Papers in the National and International Seminars. Dr. Namita Jaiswal has one book under publication which will be published very soon. She is specialised in Premchand Sahitay and Women's Studies. She also presented and participated many Research Papers in the National and International Seminars. Dr. Jaiswal also actively participated in many Workshops related with Syllabus Revision and others which were held in the University of Culcutta. Dr. Ranjana Sharma is specialised in Women's Studies and Folk Literature. A book on Folk Literature is published by her. She presented many Research Papers in the National and International Seminars .She attended many Workshops of NCERT, New Delhi. Dr. Sharma completed Minor Research Project of UGC, on comparative literature previously.
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES :
Munshi Premchand Jayanti was celebrated on August 1, 2016
A Seminar titled "Hindi Sahitya: Vartaman Paridrishya" was organised. Resource Person was Dr. Geeta Dubey, Associate Professor & Head of Hindi Department, Scottish Church College, Kolkata
The teachers and students of the department work enthusiastically to assure the success of NSS, Ethic and Value Education, Annual Prize Day programme, The Inter Class Cultural Competition and various other functions.
Departmental Seminars by the students are regularly arranged by the department to provide wider exposure to the students.
Departmental Wall Magazine (Nawal Charan) publication under the guidance of the teachers is on of the best platform for students to project their creative writing skill.
The new comer students of Hindi Honours participated in the Inter College Debate group and won the Prizes. They also participated in recitation competition organised by Sanskriti Mela, Matribhasha Rastriya Shikshan Sansthana and other.
The department of Hindi with its Honours Course have been setting the sail for study, training and an all round development of the girl students of this college. Departmental Library has several books for accessing the students in their own corner. In the Central Library there are 500 books for enhancing their knowledge and all round development of writing and speech delivery skill.
From 2016, the syllabus of Hindi Honours. Pass and MIL (B.A) Courses of the University of Calcutta, are going through a change of subjects. This will be applied for the fresh group batch of students applying for 1st year Hons late this year.

Priti Tiwari, student of UG I, participated in National Cadet Corps, 1 Bengal Air SQN NCC Annual Training Camp-111 in August 2016. She also participated in National Cadet Corps, 3 Bengal Batallion NCC, Combined Annual Training Camp-XI, (LRDC-1) in January 2017.
Shanti Jha, student of UG I participated in Maithili Geetgayen Pratiyogita-2016 organised by Maithili Vikas Parishad of West Bengal and achieved 1st position.
Kusum Verma, student of UG I, participated in Extempore in Hindi Mela 2016 acquiring First Prize.
Swati Mishra, Student of UG II, participated in All India Essay Writing Event 2016 and achieved Institute Level Certificate.
Tara Roy, Student of UG I, participated in All India Essay Writing Event 2016 and achieved Institute Level Certificate.
The students of Hindi Department avidly took part in different cultural programmes organized by Bethune College. In 2015, the cultural programs 'Alap' was well participated by our students. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were won by Swari Mishra, Mousumi Roy and Soni Kumari Ram respectively. In the 'Mehendi Drawing' section, Nandini Tiwari acquired the first position. The 'Nail Art' section was won by Mousumi Roy (Winning the second prize).
In sports, 2015- Soni Kumari Ram acquired the second position in Relay Race along with Barsha Shaw in 3rd position in all three games - a) Javelin Throwing b) Discus Throwing c) Needle Race.
