Three year Honours Degree Course (Calcutta University).
U.G. General Course for students with Honours in other Humanities subjects.

About the Department

The teaching of History in Bethune College started from the very inception of the college in 1879,as the subject was then as compulsory one in the syllabus for the First Examination in Arts. For long time there was only one paper in Compulsory History in the B.A Examination and in those days teachers were appointed by the Government to teach History along with some other subject .Thus the early records reveal the name of Sm. Surabala Ghosh, an alumnus of our College, as a lecturer in History and Bengali from 1903-1912,later she was appointed to officiate as the Principal of the College for sometime .The History Honours and Pass courses started functioning in the year of 1950. The first Honours student of this Department graduated in 1952 and secured a fairly high place in Second Class. The Three years Degree courses is introduced in 1982. Some of the pioneering teachers of this Department were Marie Bonnerji, Sushovan Sarkar (rendered Honarary Service from1933-34) , Karunakana Gupta(1938-1952) , DR. Roma Neogy, Dr .Bharati Ray, Bandana Ghosh, Dr.Hena Mukherjee.
