About the Department

The Department of Economics, Bethune College, Kolkata, was established in the year 1917. Initially, the Department only offered General Course in Economics. Since 1963, the Department started offering Honours course in Economics under the University of Calcutta. The Department has a faculty strength consisting of four sanctioned teaching posts. Currently the faculty consists of three Associate Professors and one Assistant Professor. All the teachers in the department are very much dedicated to imparting the best of their teaching to the students and put in their relentless effort to bring out the best in the students. Towards this end, they undertake various projects and programmes besides intensive class room teaching. Not only the teachers put in considerable time hours for interacting with the students on academic issues beyond class hours, but they also encourage the students to develop their research and analytical skills. For this purpose, the department organises seminars, invited lectures and workshops from time to time. The department has to its credit, organising seminars by eminent economists on various national and global economic issues. Recently, the department hosted, the 40th Annual National Conference of the Bangiya Arthaniti Parishad (Bengal Economic Association) over two days with many celebrated economists of the country. The students of the department have a good relationship with the teachers of the same. This is reflected in the good results and securing of high rank by the students in the university examinations. The economics department has got distinguished alumni who are placed in different national and international institutes of repute as teachers and research scholars and also in big corporate houses.

Infrastructure

The Economics department is endowed with good infrastructural facilities.

  • Library: There is a very rich library for the use of the students and the faculty. The departmental library has over 300 books and there is also a book bank with 150 books.
  • Special equipment/Teaching aid: This department has also modern equipment and software packages for access of the student


 

Research Activities

The faculty members of the Department have publications to their credit in several National and International journals and books. The main research areas of the faculty members of the department are Agriculture, Health, Trade and Industry, Macroeconomic Policies, Globalization and Social Sectors among others. Dr. Suranjana Dasgupta, Dr. Maitri Ghosh, Dr. Dipyaman Pal and Dr. Satarupa Bandyopadhyay of this department have completed Minor and Major Research Projects in recent years. The faculty members are regular invited speakers in National and International Conferences/ Seminars/ Workshops etc. They also extend their research expertise working as reviewers in peer reviewed journals, discussants and chair in different in National and International Conferences/ Seminars/ Workshops etc. The department also promotes research in the students and also encourages them to participate in seminars and publish in journals.
