Bethune College NSS Unit
The NSS unit of Bethune College was
formalized in 2006. The College maintains a very active NSS
unit. Dr. Sritama Mukherjee, Assistant Professor, Department of
Botany is presently acting as the NSS Program Officer of Bethune
College NSS Unit from 1st July, 2021 onwards. She had attended
the 7 day orientation program for NSS PO at Ramakrishna Mission,
Narendrapur from 11.09.2022 to 17.09.2022.
NSS Unit of the College
- Regular Activities: Students undertake various programmes in the adopted slum, college/school campuses during weekends or after college hours. NSS is included as a class on Saturday in the college routine. NSS Volunteers have to complete 120 hours of regular service per year.
- Special Camp: A camps of 07 days duration is organised in the adopted urban slum by involving local communities. Approximately 50 NSS volunteers participate every year.
- Red Ribbon Activities: World AIDS Day Celebration and Health camps are organized as a part of Red ribbon activities.

Systematic Voter's Education and Electoral Participation Program (SVEEP) 2024
Systematic Voter's Education and Electoral Participation Program was jointly organized by NSS Unit and Students' Activity Cell in collaboration with Election Commission of India (Shyampukur A. C.) for the UG Sem1 students (1st time voters) of the college. A total of 166 students participated.
Observation of Youth Week 2024
NSS Volunteers collected old winter clothes and distributed them among the slum people of Ahiritola Ghat to "Reduce, Recycle and Reuse".

NSS Day Celebration, 2023
NSS Day was celebrated through a cleanliness drive and plantation program on 23.09.2023 in the adopted slum Gobagan. 10 Hibiscus saplings and one mogra sapling were planted. Phenyls were donated for the community bathrooms of the slum. On 27.09.2023 an Orientation program was arranged for the NSS Volunteers. Dr. Partha Karmakar, Deputy Secretary, WBBPE and Ex-Program Officer, Bethune College NSS Unit was the speaker.

Saree Fair
A Saree
Fair was held on 10.10.2023 in the adopted slum Goabagan. Sarees
in good condition were donated by the faculty members of the
college.
The program was started with a speech on *Khadi and it's
importance* for the NSS Volunteers and Women of the slum
followed by a brief training on 'How to recognize Handlooms' .
The slum women have discovered that silks, handlooms, cotton
printed sarees could be chosen on their own and volunteers and
teachers acted as their helping hands.

New clothes were donated to the 56 children of Nalta Arindam Welfare Society for the upcoming Durga Puja. Clothes were donated by the faculty members of the college. Books and soft toys collected by the volunteers throughout the year were also donated.The volunteers and teachers spent an afternoon with them and participated in the cultural program by the orphanage children.

Christmas Celebration
NSS Volunteer, Neha Acharya has taken an
initiative to celebrate Christmas with the slum children of
Bagbazar and Ahiritola Ghat by providing them breakfast, cakes
fruits, chocolates and caps. Bethune College NSS Unit have
extended their helping hands by providing the entire amount they
have raised by selling eco-friendly handicrafts from the fest
stall and volunteering the entire program.

World Environment Day, 2023
Visit to Keertika Protection Home ,2023
NSS Unit of Bethune College visited Keertika Protection Home, a unit of Rescue and Relief Foundation on 17.02.2023. The volunteers and teachers spent an afternoon with the children who are mostly rescued from trafficking. Copies, pens, crayons, fruits and chocolates among the children. The children also exhibited their crafts, drawings and handmade jewellery.

Certificate Course in "Handicraft and Art Work"
On 03.05.2023 a collaboration agreement was signed between the NSS Units of Women's Christian College, Kolkata and Bethune College, Kolkata to organize a 30 Hours Certificate Course in "Handicraft and Art Work" for the session 2022-23. The NSS Volunteers of the two colleges are eligible for the course.

Bethune College NSS volunteers have participated in a Dengue Awareness Rally conducted by Calcutta University from Deshbandhu College to Basanti Devi College on 11.11.2022.
PLOG Run Cum Awareness Rally
Bethune College NSS Unit in collaboration with Vidyasagar College NSS Unit is organizing a plog run cum awareness rally around the historical sites located at the periphery of the two colleges to celebrate Fit India freedom run under the theme "Azadi ka 75 saal, fitness rahe bemisaal" . NSS Volunteers will collect the non-biodegradable wastes around these area according to the directives of Clean India 2.0.

A seminar on 'Thalassemia Awareness' was organized in collaboration with Rotary Club of Ganga Heritage and NSS Unit, Surendranath College, Kolkata on 23.04.2022 The speaker was Dr. Ramendu Hom Chaudhury, MS Specialization Orthopaedic Sri Aurobindo Seva Kendra.

NSS special Camp for the session 2021-22
A seven day Special Camp was organized commencing from 08.03.2022 to 14.03.2022. Forty seven student volunteers from UG Semester-IV were participated in the Camp at Bethune college and Swikriti Sangha Club, Goabagan, Kolkata 700006. The programs include seminars, slum visit, awareness programs, organic manure production, campus cleanliness drive and heath camp.

Awareness Program on College Biodiversity
On 29th and 30th November (Monday and Tuesday) an awareness program on college biodiversity was organized for the NSS volunteers by the NSS unit in collaboration with Department of Botany. The faculties have shared their knowledge on the medicinal plant garden and the biodiversity of the college Placards were posted for the plants to be maintained by the NSS unit.

Distribution of new clothes to Orphanage
The NSS Unit of Bethune College have distributed new clothes among the 51 children of the 'Nalta Arindam Welfare Society' before Durga Puja on 4th October, 2021. Stationaries (copies, pen, pencil, color) and food were also provided to the children by the faculty members of the college
NSS Day celebration
An online program was organized for the NSS volunteers on 23rd September, 2021 from 5:30 pm. Inaugural speech was given by Prof. Krishna Roy, Principal, Bethune College. Dr. Hiroj Kumar Saha, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Bethune College delivered a lecture on 'A general awareness about Dengue and its controlling measure'. An online poster competition on the topic "Pandemic, Poverty and Starvation: A socio-economic impact of COVID-19" was also organised for the NSS volunteers on 24th September to celebrate NSS Day.

Distribution of stationeries to the school children of the street dwellers 2021
On 25th August 2021 an initiative has been taken by the NSS unit of the college to distribute stationeries (copies, pen, pencil, color) to the school going children of the street dwellers in front of the college gate.
75th Independence Day Observation 2021
This year the NSS unit actively organized and participated in the independence day. The flag hoisting programme was followed by a short plantation programme by honourable Principal madam, TCS, teaching and non-teaching staffs to commemorate the 75th independence day of our nation. Sanitizer, mask, soap and biscuits were distributed to the slum dwellers in front of the college gate. Also to know about the present vaccination and COVID status of the teaching and non-teaching staffs, the NSS members have initiated a vaccination record drive.
Bethune Day and Banmahotsav 2021
This year NSS have taken the responsibility of the Banmahotsav programme on 12th August 2021, Bethune Day Celebration. Shrubs like Lagerstroemia speciosa, Hibiscus, Ixora, Amla plants were planted in the college premises.
Certificate Course in Bratachari
NSS unit of Bethune College is conducting a Certificate Course for interested students on 'Bratachari' in collaboration with Bengal Bratachari Samiti. The program has been initiated by the Special Secretary, Higher Education Department and Bethune College has been selected as the 1st college for such venture. Introductory lecture was organised on 12th June, 2021, from 5p.m. Classes have started from 10th July 2021 and going to occur on every Saturday.

An Workshop was organised on 24.04.2021 by NSS Unit, Bethune College in collaboration with Bengal Bratachari Society for Physical and Mental Skill Development of the Faculty Members and Non-teaching Staff.

Visit to an Orphanage
An orphanage 'Nalta Arindam Welfare Society' was visited by the NSS Unit of Bethune College along with other faculty members on 05.03.2021. Food was distributed to the children residing there on behalf of the unit.
Boi Katha Kao, A mini book Fair
On 18.02.2021, a mini bookfair 'Boi Kotha Kao' (Hummimgbooks) was arranged in the Central Hall of the college. Along with many booksellers and publishers from outside, NSS Unit Bethune college, donated old and new books. Some stationeries were also distributed to the street children on that day.

NSS Outreach Programme 2
The NSS Unit of Bethune College organized a programme on 15th December,2020. It was held in Centenary Hall of Kadambini Bhaban. Keeping in mind the Covid situation, two representatives from an orphanage house, 'Nalta Arindam Welfare Society', situated in Dumdum Cantonment area were invited. Old but usable clothes were handed over to them so that they can distribute these clothes among needy people. Around 50 children live there. Some food items like cake, chocolates etc. were sent for their refreshments.
Bethune Day and Banmahotsav Celebration
Bethune Day and Banmahotsav was celebrated at the college campus on 12.08.2020. Bethune statue was honoured and a tribute was paid in front of Bethune Plaque by the teachers and staffs of the college. This programme was followed by Banomahotsab ceremony. The Principal along with teachers and non-teaching members, NSS members and the Alumni participated by planting saplings donated by the Alumni Association.
Yoga for Health-Yoga at Home
International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on 21st June. The theme was "Yoga for Health-Yoga at Home". Considering the prevailing situation the United Nations suggested this theme. The NSS Unit of Bethune College celebrated the occasion through the posters prepared by NSS volunteers on 21.06.2020. These posters depict different asanas and describe their benefits.
NSS Outreach Programme 1
The NSS unit of Bethune College jointly with the NGO, Nalta Arindam Welfare Society extended its support to the poor and downtrodden people. Specially, the children of Bamangachi, Sajerhat and Sundarban were given baby food and other food items. Nalta Arindam Welfare Society took initiative to distribute them among those people. These activities took place from 6th May to 14th May 2020.
